  1. Stress
    • When an officer finds themselves in a survival situation, such as a high-speed pursuit or a shootout, a tremendous amount of stress is incurred. There are natural physiological responses to these stressful situations that can cause a degradation of skills and decision making.

    Exercises
    • Scenario-based exercise usually include trainers acting out certain situations such as a domestic dispute or a traffic stop. Officers are then "called to the scene" and must respond appropriately, including proper radio transmissions, sound legal judgment and proper use of force. These scenarios typically evolve into high-risk or high-stress encounters.

    Purpose
    • The intent of survival training is to use scenario-based exercises to expose officers to these conditions so they are prepared to respond effectively in the field. Scenario training should be stressful in nature. Creating memories of effective actions while under stress allows the trainee to more quickly implement appropriate actions in similar stressful situations.
